Player Evaluations (Tryouts) are on March 2 at Noon!

Southwest Little League player evaluations, commonly referred to as "tryouts", are perennially the first official on-field event of the baseball season.

This year's "tryouts" will be held at the newly renovated sporting complex at Steve Cox Memorial Park on Saturday, March 2, from Noon until 2 p.m. All "player pitch" players are invited to attend and take part in baseball drills. League coaches will be on-hand to evaluate player abilities to guide the process of filling team rosters.

What your player needs

Players are required to have their own baseball glove and be wearing their protective athletic cup. For their own safety, nobody missing either of these two items can be allowed to participate in the evaluation process.

Early weather forecasts are calling for a cold and cloudy day, so a top priority should be that players are dressed appropriately for athletic activity in cooler temperatures. Players should be able to move freely, while staying warm. Let's hope the rain and snow stay away!

Because there will be plenty of exertion, hydration is a concern, so please assure your player has (and drinks) plenty of water.

Cleats are not required, but if there is moisture on our new turf field, the surface might be too slick for gym shoes, so cleats are strongly recommended.

Players are welcome to bring their own baseball bat, as long as it meets current Little League bat standards. They may also use any other baseball gear they may have (batting gloves, ball cap, batting helmet, etc.).

And don't forget to have your player use the restroom before the event begins!

What will happen at evaluations?

When you arrive at Steve Cox, find league representatives to get your player checked-in for the event. Players will be assigned a number to help coaches easily identify everyone throughout the day. Players should also be prepared to identify their desired positions for the coming season.

Once the event begins, players will be watched and evaluated on everything they do, including how they listen to direction and execute what they are asked them to to, so please remind them to be ready to perform from the moment they step onto the field!

Players will start with stretching and light jogging (not racing, that comes later). After that, participants will be paired by ability to warm their arms playing catch.

Once warm, the players will take part in a series of drills covering running, infield play, outfield play, batting, catching, and pitching:

  • 40-yard sprints
  • Four ground balls (direct at player, to their right, to their left, and a slow roller to charge) the players will field and complete a throw first base (an adult volunteer).
  • Two balls to right field (one grounder and one fly ball) to field and complete a throw to third base.
  • Two balls to center field (one grounder and one fly ball) to field and complete a throw to home plate.
  • Players will be directed to swing only at pitches in the strike zone.
  • Each player gets ONLY seven swings.
  • Players who complete their batting are welcome to help coaches field the remaining batters hits. They will NOT be evaluated for fielding during the batting drills.
  • All prospective catchers should be in catcher equipment for this drill.
  • Catchers will catch prospective pitchers, with the catcher changing with each pitching change.
  • Pitchers get five warm-up pitches before throwing five pitches for evaluation.
  • Upon receiving a pitcher's tenth pitch, the catcher should throw the ball to second base (an adult volunteer)
  • Once pitching and catching is completed, players should make their way to the pitching-mound area with their parent/guardian to hear explanation of next step
